EXT. ORPHANAGE. DAY.

A large plaque on the drab three-story brick building reads KANSAS STATE COLORED ORPHANS HOME.

Title:  Three Months Later. Wichita, Kansas.

INT. ORPHANAGE AUDITORIUM—STAGE. DAY.

RUBY, wearing a balky FISK COLLEGE sweater and polka-dot bloomers, stands Stage Right with her hands held high in the air.  She composes herself.  A moment of high drama passes. 

The auditorium is packed.  BLACK ORPHANS, wearing clean hand-me-down clothes, stare at RUBY on the stage.  Their FACES are aglow in joyful anticipation.  Some of them sit on the edge of their seats.

RUBY nods her head slightly.  AUNTIE MAMA, at the piano in front of the stage, PLAYS a fanfare and… 

…RUBY takes off running and tumbling in forward somersaults the length of the stage.

The ORPHANS break into APPLAUSE.

Then RUBY takes off in the opposite direction, doing backward somersaults to her original starting point to MORE APPLAUSE.

In the Stage Left Wings, DOROTHY and VIVIAN cheer their mother on, clapping enthusiastically.  DOROTHY is scanning the jubilant FACES in the audience when her eyes suddenly grow wide with fright.
